The Mission of PS78Teachers is to encourage an interest in, and to facilitate the creation of, God-centered day schools and home schools in evangelical churches worldwide, and to equip teachers for these schools. All instruction is shaped by a Reformed biblical view of education. A key component of this ministry is the online Teacher Education Program.

Why PS78?

“PS78” is a reference to Psalms 78:4, a verse that commands the people of God to "not hide" but to pass on to the next generation the “glorious deeds of the Lord.” The PS78 Teacher Education Program is designed to equip parents and teachers with the knowledge, skills, and passion needed to more fully and faithfully carry out this task and to avoid teaching in such a way that God is perceived to be irrelevant and, therefore, hidden from our children.

About the PS78Teacher Education Program (PS78-TEP)

In conjunction with Miami International Seminary (MINTS), the PS78 Teacher Education Program (PS78-TEP) offers a Certificate in Christian Teacher Education (30 credits) or a Master of Christian Education (MCE), with a concentration in Christian School Education (60 credits) to non-U.S. residents. The free program of study consists of a biblical studies component--produced by Third Millennium Ministries (IIIM)--and a teacher education component that approximates the Integrated Curriculum & Instruction specialization in the Master of Education program at Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, Georgia, U.S.A. What is the purpose of PS78-TEP?

The purpose of PS78 Teacher Education Program (PS78-TEP) is to prepare competent teachers who practice their craft according to Biblical precepts in any and every educational setting. To do this, students examine carefully, in the light of God’s Word, various principles and practices proposed by both secular and Christian educators. Students then apply their biblically informed convictions. Candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become teachers who model life-long learning and faithful service to God as change-agents in society.

Why have a biblical studies component for Christian home and day school teachers?

To have a God-centered day or home school, teachers must first have a firm knowledge of the Bible and the God of the Bible. For this reason, the biblically grounded education courses for teachers, parents, and church leaders are accompanied by an overview of the Old Testament and the New Testament, as well as an introduction to biblical theology.

Are there any fees associated with PS78-TEP?

PS78-TEP does not charge a fee for any course; however, local Teacher Education study centers may stipulate a minimal per credit fee to cover study center expenses (i.e. room rental, electricity, copy cost, etc.). All PS78 Teacher Education study centers must operate as a non-profit organization.

Who can apply?

Non-U.S. residents may take courses in the PS78-TEP curriculum for academic credit and will, upon satisfactory completion of all required courses, earn a Certificate in Christian Teacher Education or a Master of Theological Studies, Education Major from Miami International Seminary (MINTS). U.S. residents may not take these courses for academic credit or earn a Certificate or Master’s degree from Miami International Seminary (MINTS). However, U.S. residents may and are encouraged to view the courses, download the readings and take the quizzes and exams for their own edification.

Is regular access to a classroom required?

Yes, access to a classroom is required; however, upon request, alternative assignments are available to participants who have no regular access to a classroom. Each course has assignments in which participants will be asked to apply what has been learned to their own teaching situation, whether it be a home school or day school setting.

What are the BIBLICAL STUDIES requirements?

In coordination with Birmingham Theological Seminary (BTS) and Third Millennium Ministries (IIIM), the Biblical Studies Component of the PS78 Teacher Education Program can be fulfilled by completing the BTS requirements for a Certificate in Christian Ministry (CCM). All applicants for the PS78 Teacher Education Program are automatically enrolled in the BTS CCM program under the PS78Teachers’ Cohort. All materials necessary to complete the CCM program are on the BTS site and are free for all who reside outside the United States. Upon completion of the 27 credit hours you will receive a certificate from Birmingham Theological Seminary that will count as the fulfillment of Component 2 of the PS78 Teacher Education Program. Requests for transfer/equivalency credits from MINTS-approved, master’s level, Old or New Testament survey courses or biblical doctrine courses will be considered on an individual basis. Available courses

An introduction to the goals, requirements, and foundational beliefs of the PS78 Teacher Education Program. Students complete the Faith-Curriculum Integration Survey (Pre-Test). Required before registering for other courses.

Prerequisite: none. 1 credit hour.

A study of the implications of a biblical worldview and of the various foundational principles that guide in the selection of goals, content, and materials in the curriculum. Students evaluate these principles from a Christian perspective, and choose those appropriate for evaluating and changing classroom practice in day or home schools.

Prerequisite: EDU 600. 3 credit hours.

An introduction to research methods and designs and their application to educational settings. Emphasis is given to developing sufficient knowledge and skills to critique and apply research articles in the home or school classroom.

Prerequisite: EDU 610. 3 credit hours.

An application of a biblical worldview to the processes and products of curriculum development and assessment for the K-12 day or home school or school system. Students examine the steps in developing a course of study from a school's mission statement through the assessment process. The issue of local or national standards is addressed. Criteria for the evaluation of textbooks and other curriculum materials is developed.

Prerequisite: EDU 610, 620. 3 credit hours.

A comprehensive survey of current research on learning and its implications for classroom practice. Learning theories are related to a Christian view of the learner, the role of the teacher, and the learning process in order to develop effective and appropriate instructional and assessment models, which are then applied in a school-based project.

Prerequisite: EDU 610. 4 credit hours.

A study of strategies for planning instruction to create a better learning environment for all students. Instructional strategies, including the use of technology, are examined in the light of learning principles and other research findings. A biblical view of learners, teachers, curriculum, and the global community guides student inquiry.

Prerequisite: EDU 640. 4 credit hours.

A study of the process of designing curricula that are integrated and conceptually focused. Students will learn to design units of instruction that focus on major enduring understandings and principles, and reflect a biblical worldview, resulting in instruction that enables teachers to engage their students and help them remember and apply the concepts they learn.

Prerequisite: EDU 610, 710. 4 credit hours.

An in-depth study of the research literature related to the teaching of the various content fields. Emphasis is given to research that has implications for instruction, and to current trends in the design of curricula and teaching practice.

Prerequisite: EDU 620, 640. 3 credit hours.

A capstone, culminating project for PS78-TEP that incorporates content and integrates insights from all course work throughout the program. The project typically builds on plans for integrated curriculum and instruction developed in EDU 720 Integrative Approaches to Curriculum. In EDU 750, those plans are implemented in the classroom using an action research framework.

Prerequisites: EDU 620, 720. 3 credit hours.

A course to guide students through the process of creating an individualized Reformational Action Plan (RAP) to meet the need for change within their particular local. Adult learning theory will be reviewed to prepare students to be agents of change and teachers or teachers within their community.

Prerequisites: EDU 750. 2 credit hours

This course is a basic introduction to the science of biblical hermeneutics. Hermeneutics concerns the rules or guidelines to properly interpret Scripture. Teachers are taught to accurately read Scripture following time-tested, sound practices for exegesis, which is the deep study of a passage of scripture in order to extract the original meaning or principles intended by the human author AND the divine author, God.

Prerequisite: Successfully completed ALL course required for both biblical studies and educational components. 3 credit hours.

Teachers will write a brief commentary on an assigned book of the Bible. Careful study of Scripture is required in order to uncover/discover the biblical principles that apply to each area of study (academic disciplines) and to each aspect of teaching (instructional strategies). This final project is designed to help teachers grow in their ability to rightly read God’s Word so they can rightly apply God’s Word to whatever academic discipline they are teaching, as well as be able to rightly teach God’s Word directly to students in Bible class, chapel, and one-on-one.
